There's a lot said on this topic, mostly against. However, I find it to be an unfortunately overlooked function that is useful if you have the right use case. Among advantages are that a number of things are thread safe when they are not so for multiprocessing, such as logging. Threading got easier with the … Continue reading Python threads
Gear: Aerostich Carbon Fiber Sidestand Plate (CFSP) MK II Deluxe
$30 of motorcycle gear excess, but it does what it says on the tin. I bought this during a point in my marriage where it was either I spent the money or my wife would; saving it was not an allowed option. It works but not better than far cheaper options. The cord is a … Continue reading Gear: Aerostich Carbon Fiber Sidestand Plate (CFSP) MK II Deluxe
Blog note
I have removed some old posts. They were imported from my old blog and were written by my ex-wife. All were from our cross country motorcycle trip in 2014. I don't feel it fair to keep her posts here, where she can no longer have any access to them, and that they showed up under … Continue reading Blog note
San Francisco, Summer 2018
Golden Gate Bridge, looking up between a set of suspender cables. Also caught a jetliner at the middle of the left edge. The only edit is resizing; B&W was accomplished in camera. I sat on these images for a while. The trip was with a the people with whom I was in a live-in triad, … Continue reading San Francisco, Summer 2018
Book: The Meritocracy Trap
If this were bread I would say it was over-risen and under-baked. The same ingredients with better process would yield a far better product. In this post I am focusing on criticisms. The book presents a lot of good and useful data, though I'm not certain any of it is unique to this book. Facts … Continue reading Book: The Meritocracy Trap
Home science: teapot cooling.
Hypothesis: tea cools faster if the teapot is not covered with a towel. Limitations:I don't have a well-controlled setup nor instruments with lab-grade low margin of error, so the control for scientific rigor is limited. The ambient temperature likely varied during the test, though never reached a point for the apartment thermostat to turn on … Continue reading Home science: teapot cooling.
Happy new year.
I've been thinking about both the past year and the past decade. Ten years ago I was finally making transition progress, after 15 years of fighting therapists and getting nowhere, but it was glacially slow. I wondered if the physicians were going to let me get anywhere before I was 50. I was working for … Continue reading Happy new year.
The Bazaar 1999 (tech conference)
This was a conference that ran one time, December 14-16, in NYC. LWN.net's archives list it as "attendance is light" and there's a good chance this User Friendly webcomic is in reference to the event. The big features of the show were VA Linux Systems, who had recently had their IPO, and Andover's ".NET Pavilion" … Continue reading The Bazaar 1999 (tech conference)
The DEAD_EATER
Tech memories from a former job. A past employer was a big DEC OpenVMS and Tru64 Unix shop in the late 1990s and early 2000s, and mostly on AlphaServers. It was also a school owned by a Christian religious order and physical plant took advantage of a short break in the spring academic calendar afforded … Continue reading The DEAD_EATER
Downtime
I've been pretty sick off and on since late October so haven't done a lot. The spate of gear review posts were all done one day that I had energy. Mostly my riding has been necessary stuff like to the grocery store. Here's to more rides in 2020!
