I think this is going down as "The Salt Ride." 300-odd miles of I-80, large portions of which were around the Great Salt Lake and on the Bonneville Salt Flats (location of the infamous speedway.) Morton salt company has a salt pan operation in this region (the tallest building of the complex has the Morton … Continue reading SLC to Winnemucca
Farmington to Salt Lake City
A late start due to the grueling and late right the night before. We had lunch before even starting the bikes, going to Blake's Lottaburger in the same lot as the hotel. Blake's is a chain of classic fast food/burger joints of the 1950s and most if not all of its locations are in New … Continue reading Farmington to Salt Lake City
Carlsbad to Farmington
We departed Carlsbad midday and headed to Farmington. I believe we stopped for lunch before leaving Carlsbad and did dinner in Albuquerque. There isn't a lot to note on this day as it was a "cover miles" sort of trip. The significant event in the early part of the ride was Angela suffering heat stress, … Continue reading Carlsbad to Farmington
Hello from the Bonneville Salt Flats!
Fort Stockton to Carlsbad.
Angela needed to get out of the desert and the only options were to backtrack or head north. Due to poor sleep we weren't able to get underway until late in the morning, which meant crossing the desert during the hottest times. We didn't have much trouble on this, however. She noted that it felt … Continue reading Fort Stockton to Carlsbad.
A note about desert riding.
I'm still playing catch-up but making progress. For now, here's a bit of a PSA. I didn't include this in my last post and should have, as it also factors into the two posts that I'm about to make. Desert riding cannot be described as "safe." If you attempt it, you are never actually safe. … Continue reading A note about desert riding.
Spending the day in Fort Stockton
Angela was in no shape to ride on Friday so we booked the room for an extra night and she slept. I went for a ride, taking the ZR-7s. First stop: Pecos, and the West of Pecos Museum. The 50-odd mile ride up US 285 was hot and dry, but fast. The speed limit is … Continue reading Spending the day in Fort Stockton
Austin to Fort Stockton
Thursday, after checking out, we visited The Country Weaver and had lunch at Magnolia Grille South (as the sign says, "Sorry, we're open.") The kind women at the yarn shop gave us the suggestion to visit The Tinsmith's Wife in Comfort, which was not far off our planned route to Fort Stockton. We decided to … Continue reading Austin to Fort Stockton
La Grange and Austin
On Wednesday we left Houston and headed for Austin, going by way of La Grange (yes, the one from the ZZ Top song.) We made a rest stop there at a little coffee shop across from the courthouse (quite delightful; if you're ever in the area check out Latte on the Square.) I encountered an … Continue reading La Grange and Austin
Route change
As noted in her post, Angela is not well. The desert air isn't helping and she is in no shape for a desert crossing so we're going north instead. I'll do some catch-up updates here tonight.
